EASOTIC® Otic Suspension: Rapid & Effective Treatment for Canine Ear Infections (Otitis Externa)

Key Active Ingredients & Their Actions:

• Hydrocortisone Aceponate (HCA) (1.11 mg/mL):
  • Action: A potent, new-generation glucocorticosteroid (a type of steroid) with strong anti-inflammatory properties. It belongs to the diester class, which acts locally with minimal systemic absorption, reducing the risk of systemic side effects.
  • Benefit: Rapidly and effectively reduces the inflammation, redness, swelling, and severe itching associated with ear infections, providing quick relief from discomfort.
• Miconazole Nitrate (15.1 mg/mL):
  • Action: A broad-spectrum antifungal agent that specifically inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal and yeast cell membranes. This disrupts the fungal cell wall, leading to its death or prevention of spread.
  • Benefit: Highly effective against common ear yeasts like Malassezia pachydermatis, which frequently contribute to otitis externa. It also has some antibacterial activity.
• Gentamicin Sulfate (1505 IU/mL):
  • Action: A broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, leading to the death of susceptible bacteria.
  • Benefit: Effective against a wide range of bacteria commonly associated with canine ear infections, including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.

Indications:

• Acute otitis externa in dogs.
• Acute exacerbation of recurrent otitis externa in dogs.

Dosage & Administration:

• Target Species: Dogs. (Note: Not indicated for cats unless specifically directed by a veterinarian for off-label use, and with caution due to potential differences in ear canal structures and sensitivities).
• Route: Auricular use (in the ear canal) only.
• Dosage: Administer 1 mL (one pump activation) into each affected ear once daily for five consecutive days.
• Preparation:
  • Before first administration, shake the bottle thoroughly and prime the pump by pressing it until product is dispensed.
  • It is recommended that the external ear canal should be cleaned and dried before treatment (e.g., using a neutral ear cleaner like Virbac EPI-OTIC®).
  • Any excess hair around the treatment area should be trimmed.
  • The product should be used at room temperature (do not instil cold product).
• Application: Introduce the atraumatic cannula into the ear canal. Administer one dose (1 mL) of the product in each affected ear by one pump activation. After application, gently massage the base of the ear briefly to help the preparation penetrate the lower part of the ear canal.

Contraindications & Warnings:

• Prescription Only: EASOTIC® is a veterinary prescription medicine.
• Do NOT use if:
  • Hypersensitivity (allergy) to hydrocortisone, miconazole, gentamicin, or any other components of the product is known or suspected.
  • The eardrum (tympanic membrane) is known or suspected to be perforated. Using it with a damaged eardrum can lead to inner ear damage (including hearing/balance issues) or spread the infection.
  • Used concurrently with other substances known to cause ototoxicity (harm to the ear).
  • In dogs with generalized demodicosis (mange).
• Potential Side Effects:
  • Mild to moderate redness of the ear is common (reported in about 2.4% of treated dogs).
  • In very rare cases, hearing impairment (partial hearing loss or deafness), usually temporary and primarily in older (geriatric) dogs, has been associated with the use of auricular preparations containing aminoglycosides. If this occurs, treatment should be stopped immediately.
  • Prolonged or excessive use of topical corticosteroids can lead to localized skin thinning or, in rare cases, systemic effects like adrenal suppression.
• Pregnancy/Lactation: Safety has not been established in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Use only after a careful risk-benefit assessment by a veterinarian.
• Human Safety: Not for human use. Avoid skin and eye contact. Wash thoroughly if contact occurs. If accidental ingestion or eye irritation occurs, seek medical advice immediately. Humans with known hypersensitivity to the active ingredients should avoid handling the product.
