OMNIGUARD Ear Mites Drops: Effective Treatment for Ear Mites and Associated Issues in Dogs & Cats
OMNIGUARD Ear Mites Drops is a widely available and affordable veterinary product designed to treat ear mite infestations (otodectosis) and help alleviate associated symptoms in both dogs and cats. Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are a very common cause of intense itching, discomfort, and inflammation in the ears of pets, often leading to a characteristic dark, waxy discharge resembling “coffee grounds.” OmniGuard aims to kill these mites while also addressing secondary issues like bacterial and fungal growth, and providing relief from inflammation.Key Active Ingredients & Their Actions:
While specific formulations can vary slightly, common active ingredients found in OmniGuard Ear Mites Drops, based on available information, are:- Diazinon:
- Action: An organophosphate insecticide and acaricide. It works by disrupting the nervous system of parasites, leading to their paralysis and death.
- Benefit: Highly effective against ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) in all their developmental stages (larval and adult), providing a direct mite-killing action.
- Prednisolone:
- Action: A potent synthetic corticosteroid (a type of steroid). It has strong anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-pruritic (anti-itch) properties.
- Benefit: Rapidly reduces inflammation, redness, swelling, and severe itching in the ear canal, providing quick relief from discomfort.
- Glycerin (and other auxiliary components):
- Action: A humectant that helps to moisturize and soften ear wax and debris, making it easier to remove. It can also have mild antiseptic properties.
- Benefit: Aids in the cleaning process, reduces irritation, and helps to soothe the ear canal.
Key Features & Benefits:
- Targets Ear Mites: Directly kills Otodectes cynotis, the primary cause of ear mite infestations.
- Reduces Itching & Inflammation: Prednisolone provides rapid relief from the severe itching and irritation caused by mites and associated inflammation.
- Aids in Cleaning: Helps to soften and remove the dark, waxy debris characteristic of ear mite infestations.
- Multi-Species Use: Formulated for both dogs and cats, making it a versatile option for multi-pet households.
- Easy to Use: Applied directly into the ear canal as drops.
- Addresses Secondary Issues: Helps alleviate the skin reactions and discomfort that often accompany mite infestations.
Indications:
OMNIGUARD Ear Mites Drops are indicated for:- Treatment and prevention of otodectosis (ear scabies/ear mites) caused by Otodectes cynotis in dogs and cats.
- Relief of associated itching, redness, and irritation in the ear canal.
- Aiding in the management of secondary inflammatory conditions within the ear.
Dosage & Administration:
- Target Species: Dogs and Cats.
- Route: Auricular use (in the ear canal) only.
- Preparation:
- Before application, it is crucial to clean the ear canal thoroughly to remove any scabs, crusts, and waxy discharge. This can be done using a cotton swab moistened with a dedicated ear cleanser (like Virbac Epi-Otic) or even with the OmniGuard drops themselves.
- Any excess hair around the opening of the ear canal may be trimmed to facilitate application.
- Dosage (General Guidelines – Always confirm with the product label):
- Cats and Small Dogs: 3-5 drops per affected ear.
- Medium Dogs: 4 drops per affected ear.
- Large Dogs: 5 drops per affected ear.
- Application: After cleaning, instill the recommended number of drops into the ear canal. Gently massage the base of the ear for a few seconds to help distribute the medication. Allow the pet to shake its head to help dislodge any loosened debris.
- Frequency: Typically applied once daily for a treatment period of 7 to 10 days, or up to 21 days for ear mites to cover their full life cycle and ensure eradication. Some sources suggest applying every 15 days for prevention/maintenance. Always follow your veterinarian’s specific instructions for the duration of treatment.
Contraindications & Warnings:
- For External Use Only.
- Veterinary Consultation Recommended: While often available over-the-counter, it is crucial to consult a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis before using any ear drops. Other ear conditions (bacterial/fungal infections, foreign bodies, tumors) can mimic mite infestations and require different treatments.
- DO NOT USE if the eardrum (tympanic membrane) is suspected or known to be perforated. Using ear drops with a ruptured eardrum can lead to severe inner ear damage, hearing loss, or spread of infection. A veterinarian must check the eardrum’s integrity before use.
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use on animals with known increased individual sensitivity to Diazinon, Prednisolone, or any other components of the drug.
- Side Effects: While generally safe when used as directed, potential side effects can include:
- Local irritation, redness, or discomfort at the application site.
- Rarely, systemic effects from corticosteroids if used excessively or on a ruptured eardrum.
- Neurological signs if absorbed systemically, especially with organophosphates like Diazinon (though topical application to the ear minimizes this risk).
- Discontinue use and consult a veterinarian if any adverse reactions occur.
- Age Restriction: Some sources indicate not to use on pets less than 12 weeks old. Always check the specific product label.
- Human Safety: Not for human use. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
