Indications:

• Acute and chronic otitis externa of bacterial, fungal (yeast), and/or parasitic origin in dogs and cats.
• Specifically, infections caused by bacteria sensitive to Neomycin, yeasts sensitive to Nystatin (Malassezia pachydermatis), and ear mites (Otodectes cynotis).

Dosage & Administration:

1. Clean the ear: Before applying Oridermyl, the ear canal should be thoroughly cleaned using a non-irritating ear cleanser (like a saline-based or specific veterinary ear cleaner) to remove wax, pus, and debris. This allows the medication to make better contact with the infected tissues.
2. Application:
   • Apply a small amount (e.g., a pea-sized amount or a bead of ointment about 0.5-1 cm long, depending on pet size) into the ear canal.
   • Gently massage the base of the ear to ensure even distribution of the ointment.
3. Frequency: Typically, applied once or twice daily.
4. Duration: Treatment usually continues for 7-10 days, but your veterinarian will specify the exact duration. It is vital to complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence and antimicrobial resistance.
5. Prevent licking: Prevent the animal from shaking its head immediately after application to avoid losing the product. If the pet tries to lick the product (e.g., if it gets on the paws after scratching ears), an Elizabethan collar may be necessary.

Contraindications & Warnings:

• Prescription Only: This is a powerful medication. Do NOT use without a veterinary diagnosis and prescription.
• Perforated Eardrum: Do NOT use if the eardrum is known or suspected to be ruptured. Otic preparations containing aminoglycosides (like Neomycin) can be ototoxic (cause hearing damage) if applied to a ruptured eardrum. A veterinarian must examine the eardrum prior to use.
• Hypersensitivity: Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients.
• Pregnancy/Lactation: Use with caution and only under strict veterinary guidance.
• Side Effects: While generally well-tolerated, potential side effects can include:
  • Local irritation (redness, pain)
  • Temporary deafness (rare, often linked to ruptured eardrum or prolonged use)
  • Systemic effects (rare, with prolonged or excessive use of corticosteroids, such as increased thirst/urination).
• Ear Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential, but ensure you use a gentle, appropriate cleaner.
• Resistance: Improper or incomplete use can lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance.
